Love is in the air

Great Blue Herons doing their mating dance, and preparing the nest.

Great Blue Herons preparing nest.
We have two rookery's not far from the house.  They are such interesting birds to watch.
Their mating plumage is quite spectacular.

This pair of Mallards come to our yard every year.  The male is quite protective of her and guards while she eats.
They have nested in our yard. once her eggs hatch she hustles them away.  She did check out our yard this year, but there is nothing here that could hide her and the eggs.

I was checking this nest out to see if anything was in it. Looks like a Red-tailed Hawk is sitting on the nest.

This Robin has taken up residence at my house.
She built that nest in a matter of hours.

Here is a pair of House Finch.

Two pair of Blue-winged Teal.
They are on one of the ponds by our house.

Looks like this Canada Goose is already sitting on her nest.

Here is another picture of our mallards that come to visit.

This Mute Swan is sitting on her nest all ready.

I love this time of year. The bird migration coming north has started.  It is interesting to see what is coming through our yard.  We have several types of sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds, Grackles, Mourning Doves, Robins, and Cowbirds.  Junco's are still around.  According to birders in our area, they should be migrating farther north by now.
It will be fun to see how these birds fare.  There are several more nests being made in the pine trees behind our house.

Spring has arrived.  Got to take a walk today with out a jacket.  The sun felt so good.
Hope you are enjoying your day.

Mary

Love the bird pictures. You are very knowledgeable about them! We found a place on the Red River about 10 miles south of Shreveport where the egrets roost - dozens and dozens of them. I had never seen so many giant white birds in one place!

Take care,
