It's Chic to be Shabby

Here is the progress on my Chic to be Shabby quilt top.  I have based the hexagon and butterflies for hand applique.  The pieces that I am appliqueing now are all from vintage fabric.  Years ago I purchased pieces of vintage fabric that I am now getting around to using.

These Dresden Plates are also made from vintage fabric.  I found I have two more square frames that my Dad had made, and have decided It would be nice to made the Dresden's and frame them.  It is fun using my vintage finds.  This goes for the trims and buttons I have, too.

Enjoy sewing today.

Good Morning Monday

I hope everyone had a great weekend. It was gorgeous here in Oswego.  It was in the 80's and 90's, blue skies, and now and then puffy white clouds. I actually got a lot of sewing done. Two more mug rugs. These are the left overs from my quilt that got finished, so what do you do?  Make mug rugs out of them.

I made the Dresden plate out of old fabric. There is even a couple of pieces of feed sack. I hand stitched it to a quilted background, which I did quilt, and framed it.  I needed a square frame.  Could not find anything at the stores that I was impressed with. Then I remembered that Dad had made me a lot of frames and maybe there was a square one.  I actually found three.  I see there is a bit of reflection in the glass.
Dad loved to work with wood. He could not throw away anything, kind of like we are with fabric.  I think this frame is black walnut, as it is quite dark.  He even had the glass in it.  Where he got the glass is any one's guess. It does happen to be tinted and was a tad rough around the edges.  I just need to put a paper backing on it and it will be done.
This is going to be a present for my friend in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that we are going to visit in a couple of weeks. She knew my Dad, and knew of the appreciation of wood, he and her husband shared.

Have been working on my HO HO HO projects.  I think my day is the 8th of August.  We leave for Buffalo for the annual family reunion on the 1st. I need to have everything done and photographed and ready to post by the 31st of July.  That is not too many days away.  Actually, I have 3 small projects done. The big one is moving right along and a couple others are getting their fair share of work, too.

Tomato update, looks like there are 4 more flowers blooming, so keep your fingers crossed that there will be at least 4 more tomato's.

Have a great day. Be kind to your sewing machine, show it some love by using it.

My Day, Dare to Dresden

Today is my day for "Dare to Dresden". My first Dresden is a turkey. He is made  from my vast array  of scraps, on a background of tea dyed muslin. His body and legs are pieces of wool.

Here is a closeup of "Turkey Lerkey"!  He was hand appliqued, and  machine quilted.
For my second Dresden I created " Sun Bonnet Dresden".  I started playing with different sized Dresden's , this time  with my 30's scrape fabric.  I love to hand applique and by the time I had her on the background, I had decided to hand quilt all of it.   You know how it is, one thing leads to another.

Here they are, my two Dresden 's.  Actually, I love to make Dresden plates.  I have made several projects using  it, a quilt, table topper, pincushions.  The  Dresden plate as you have seen on this "Dare to Dresden" has been used with a lot of creativity. It is making me want to cut out more and get creating.
