Yes, that is ice. Today we drove to an area known as Starved Rock, on the Illinois River near the town of Ottawa. We were interested to see the Bald Eagles that are known to frequent this area.
Here is the lock and dam with 7 barges in it. There is open water on the river, so the barges are still working their way up or down the river.
You can see how much ice is on the upper level of the river.
There looked like there was only one section of the dam open The lower part of the river hardly had any ice on it.
We saw 11 Bald Eagles on the river today. We enjoy watching these fascinating birds. Hope you are having warmer weather where you are. Happy stitching Mary

oh yes very cold but obviously not to cold for your amazing EAgle shot...wow..
It looks really cold.
Your images of the barges are really interesting. I thought the ice just stopped them, not messed with the lock capacity. It's even cold in northern Louisiana this morning (40s, and getting colder later) and as gloomy as Ottowa. I read that Lake Michigan is 90% frozen - that's a lot of ice. Terrific eagle shot too.
All in all, a good day to sew in a nice warm sewing room.
Stay warm,
Susan (will be) in Texas (later)
do you watch the Berry College eagles, they have video cameras on their nests and just hatched out two baby eagles.
you could find it at Berry College eagles cam on u tube i believe the College is in N. Ga.
Wow 11 Eagles! We haven't been eagle watching yet this year. I think it would be interesting to watch the locks.
Wonderful photos!! Thanks for sharing.
A couple of times a year we have an eagle that visits us here on the lake. We get so excited we're worse than kids. :) blessings, marlene
