Veterans Day

On Wednesday, there was a celebration at Alden, in Aurora where my Dad lives. They honored the 16 residents who are veterans. It was a beautiful celebration. A relative or person for each of the honoree was asked to say a few things about them. Dad had no idea that I was getting up to talk. I said " I, and this entire room of people, as well as our nation are very proud of you for your service during World War II, in the South Pacific. I know your service included flying in some combat missions in the TBM-Avenger aircraft, and your duties were maintenance and repair of aircraft, while based on land. My sister and I were both born in Oakland, California while you were still in the service. After you left the service you returned to your job at General Motors in Trenton, New Jersey, and were able to continue using those skills. I have always been proud to say that Dad served his country in the Navy. Dad has 2 daughters, 2 son-in-laws, 4 grandsons, 5 great granddaughters, and 2 great grandsons. I wish Mom and all the rest of our family were here to let you know we love you very much and are very proud of you."

It was a very moving ceremony. Each Veteran was given a red carnation by a young lady in the JROTC and the family member pinned it on. There was a reception after, appetizers, punch and coffee.
