Mom Duck

On Good Friday we had a Mom Mallard decide to use my garden for a nursery. She laid 10 eggs in amongst my plants. I had started to clean out the area from the winter. She decided to use it instead. We could see her from a window in our family room by looking straight down from the window sill. On Easter Sunday, she started to sit. We watched her every day. I even put out feed, but she found what she needed. She would get off her nest every morning and evening for a while to feed. Then back she would come. On Tuesday May 12, 2009 we got to see the first babies. They were tiny, yellow and brown babies. We kept checking to see how many were hatched. I counted up to 6. At one point they were sitting around her. We had the window open so we could check her progress. One time, went to check and she and the babies were gone. Have no idea where she went. So within a short time she had herded her brood away. She will not come back to the nest. I tried taking pictures. If you look close, you can see tiny head on the left side of her body. It was fun to watch. I'm sorry I did not get to see her move her babies. Maybe we will see her on the pond by our house.
